El Cosmico
El Cosmico
Under West Texas skies, deep in that far-out Marfa vibe, El Cosmico’s campground feels both throw-back and futuristic. Guests choose from vintage trailers (classics like Vagabond and Spartan) or gussied-up yurts and safari tents. (Coming soon: truly cosmic 3D-printed structures from experts who work with NASA.) Make a meal in the shared outdoor kitchen or hop a bike to town: just return in time for live music under the stars.
Starlight Motor Inn
Follow the neon-lit star in North Charleston to this mid-century dream. A landmark since 1961, the Starlight welcomed guests in leisure travel's golden age before a spell sitting empty. A 2022 remodel restored its former glory, with modern touches to rooms and common spaces such as teal-checkerboard pool area and the wood-paneled Burgundy Lounge, where DJs spin classic soul and local musicians play live.
Camptown
Cross the Rip Van Winkle Bridge over the Hudson River at the foot of the Catskills, and you’ll soon find Camptown, a collection of 26 cabins and 24 hotel rooms in the quaint hamlet of Leeds. Hike to Kaaterskill Falls, see the Art OMI sculpture park, take a dip in Colgate Lake and return to this respite for a bite of the season’s best at Casa Susanna followed by nightcap and story swap around the Camptown fire.
TOURISTS
Perched on the Hoosic River, inspired by motor lodges of yesteryear, this 46-room spot aims to be a basecamp for Berkshires adventure - wooded hikes, art excursions at MASS MoCA and The Clark, or just poolside lounging. Its rooms (known as trailheads) have an organic feel with natural accents. A common area features live music. Wind down with smoked trout and seasonal craft cocktails.
Cuyama Buckhorn
Ramble down State Route 166 (between Santa Maria and Bakersfield) to this mid-century remake with 360-degree mountain views. Built in 1952 during an oil boom, Cuyama Buckhorn served as community hub and barracks for ARCO executives. Elevated to resort-level luxury these days: pool-front patio rooms open to a bocce court and alfresco dining space. They don’t call it the Hidden Valley of Enchantment for nothing.
